A food manufacturing company, Erisco Foods Limited, yesterday rewarded Miss Umeh Kamsiyochukwu with N2.5 million for getting the highest marks in this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
The company also awarded a total of N.8m to others, including the Deeper Life High School (DLHS), four of its teachers, and two other students of the school.
While the school got N.2 million, its English language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry teachers got N.1m each, while Andrew Imoukhode and Alagwu David got N.1 million each.
Umeh had scored 360 in the exam, making her the highest scorer in the examination.
Presenting the cheques to the recipients at the company’s corporate headquarters in Ikeja yesterday, the Chief Executive Officer of Erisco Foods, Chief Eric Umeofia, said he decided to reward the feat because of his belief in excellence.
“It is a great thing to have achieved this feat among those that sat for the exam. Despite the fact that I’m not a member of your church, this is about humanity and we are serving the same God.
“These are the people who will take over from us and make Nigeria better than it is.
“…Kindly send my warm regards to Pastor Williams Kumuyi, the proprietor of the school, for the good work. We are happy to associate with him.
“Please, stay focused. Ensure that you remain the best in your studies. Desist from any immoral act. If you join them, you won’t be anybody tomorrow.
“Make sure you’re guided and abide by what the school and your parents teach you. I’m impressed and elated. Please, keep the flag flying so that you can become great in life,” he said.
Expressing appreciation for the gesture, Umeh, who also praised God, her school, its teachers and her parents for the support and sacrifice, promised to stay focused.
She also thanked the company and Chief Umeofia for the award.
DLHS Administrator, Pastor Emmanuel Eze, who praised Erisco for the gesture, said the school was popular for its culture of excellence.
According to him, 131 of its pupils got 300 and above in the last UTME, a feat he said was not the first and would not be the last.
“By the grace of God, in DLHS, we have a culture of excellence and we will continue to uphold this.
“In DLHS, we have zero tolerance for examination malpractice. Our core values are righteousness and hard work. As we work hard, we also depend on God to bless us,” Eze said.
